What this day is
The south of Tunisia has two different attractions that tour operators sell from Djerba: the dunes and the oasis at Ksar Ghilane, and the ksour and mountain villages around Tataouine. This article is about the second. A ksar is a fortified granary, built from stacked storage rooms called ghorfas. Chenini is a Berber village built into the mountainside, with cave homes and a mosque known as the mosque of the Seven Sleepers.
One operator’s itinerary, as we found it on another booking site, runs like this: pickup around 7:30 am, a photo stop at a salt lake, free time in the market of Tataouine, Ksar Ouled Soltane, a guided walk in Chenini, lunch in Guermassa, then Ksar Hadada, and back at the hotel at about 5:30 pm. Ksar Ouled Soltane and Ksar Hadada are among the places used as film sets for Star Wars. Your tour may follow a different order or skip stops, so read the description of the one you book.

All eight sit between €46.80 and €49.50, so the price does not choose for you. What differs is the length, from 6 to 10 hours, and what the day includes. The listing for the €49 trip says that it also starts from Zarzis; a second listing with the same title and a different reviews count (161) exists, which suggests the same product on two pages. Do not add the two review counts together without checking.
What the length tells you
The 6-hour and 6.5-hour versions mention lunch in the title or description; the 8-hour listing also mentions a Tunisian lunch and a visit to a local’s home. The 10-hour versions do not say what fills the extra hours, and the descriptions do not tell you whether the drive is the longer part. Ask on the booking page where the pickup is and when you are back; with a full day, the difference between getting back at 3 pm and at 7 pm changes your evening.
Both the nine-hour tour and the 8.5-hour tour mention a sunset in the desert, which may explain the long day. If you want to be back earlier, look at the shorter tours.
Tataouine or the Sahara?
This day is for villages, stone architecture and film sets, with walking and photo stops. It costs less than the Ksar Ghilane trip, about €49 against about €59, and none of the listings mentions a dune or a swim in a hot spring. If you want dunes and an oasis, take the Ksar Ghilane trip. If you can only spare one day and want both, one operator sells a ten-hour route that combines Ksar Ghilane and Chenini; it appears in the Sahara 4x4 category and costs more.
Who it isn’t for
A full day in a minibus or jeep, with climbing on uneven ground in the villages, is not for everyone. The descriptions say nothing about accessibility, so if anyone in your group has trouble walking, ask the operator before you book, and ask for the answer in writing. For small children, none of the listings state a minimum age; check the booking page. In summer, expect heat; the descriptions do not mention shade or water.
